Water Sump Pump

A water sump pump is pumping device used to get rid of or remove water that collects in a sump pit. These types of pits are mostly found in the basement of homes and are set in place to remove the excess water that gathers as part of rain, naturally occurring ground water. Water sump pumps are also used when the basement or a level of a building is set below the area’s water table.

These devices are commonly hard wired to a building or home’s electrical system and some of them may have backup battery features. In some cases the pressurized water system itself may help remove the water, thereby eliminating the need for electricity to pump out the water. As an individual who is on the lookout to purchase one of these devices or if you are merely seeking information, you also need to be aware of the two main types that are available. These are pedestal version and the submersible version. Each of these operate and function in a different way to other. The pedestal version of a water sump pump is more conspicuous while submersible version will require it to be specially sealed to eliminate the risk of electrical short circuits.

A water sump pump is made up of a collection of key components. These include a canister that forms the sump liner which is usually made of plastic or metal, the sump pump itself, a series of pipes that help remove the water and a check valve that prevents water from seeping back in through  the pipes. When selecting the right type of water sump pump, also consider if you require a completely automated version or a manual version. While the automated version may seem easier, what is best may depend on a host of reasons such as where the sump pit is, ease of access etc. the power of the water sump pump is another key element to think about. Usually these devices offer anything from ј horsepower upwards. Next consider the head pressure. By this we refer to how high the machine will pump water. Other points to consider include the cord length of the device, phase and voltage as well as backup systems and alarms.

Once you have identified and installed the ideal water sump pump to meet your specific requirements, a key follow up activity will be the proper maintenance of the device. Standard maintenance will require you to check on the components at least on an annual basis. There are numerous varieties of water sump pumps available in the market from a variety of manufacturers. Prices of these will depend on a host of factors as well.  However with the right knowledge of the sump pit and its layout and position you should find it quite easy to identify the right water sump pump you need.
