Sump Pump Parts

A sump pump is a device used to remove accumulated water in a sump pit at times of floods or other emergency situations. Sump pumps are generally wired into a home’s electrical system and use many backup batteries to ensure continuous functioning with minimum failures.

A standard sump pump in the United States comprises of four main components, referred also as sump pump parts. They are; namely, a canister to form a sump liner, a sump pump, a set of pipes and a check valve. The above mentioned sump pump parts are essential for any sump pump device to achieve its core purpose of removing accumulated water.

The first part in a series of sump pump parts is the canister, which is used to form a sump liner, produced out of plastic or metal. A sump pump canister with a width of two feet and depth of two to three feet, which will have the ability to hold 15-25 gallons of water, is considered to be the ideal dimension to ensure reliable functioning. The price of a canister will vary according to its capacity requirement and the material is it produced from. The average price of a metal canister which can hold the above mentioned capacity would amount to $100 while the average price of a plastic canister would amount to half the price of a metal canister or less.

The second of the sump pump parts is the sump pump. A pump with a 200W or 400W horsepower could be used powered either by electricity or battery. Generally a combination of both is used, where the electric powered is utilized as the main pump while the battery powered is used as a backup pump at times of power failure.

The third of the sump pump parts is to have set of pipes, typically 38mm produced out of PVC which will be routed from the pump, through a check valve and directed out of the house.

The last of the sump pump parts is a check valve. A check valve is a device used to allow water flow into one particular direction. A check valve comprises of two port valves where one is used as an entrance port while the other is used as an exit port when in use. The core purpose of this sump pump parts is that it ensures that the water doesn’t flow backwards through the pipes back to the sump once the pump is turned off.

In addition to the above essential and basic sump pump parts, backup components are also advised in case of failures in the first pump. The backup sump pump parts include a 12V battery driven sump pump, a lead-acid card battery and a tickle charge car battery charger. Additionally, for those individuals who do not prefer battery operated backup pumps, the option of pumps which operate under water pressure are also being introduced to the market which may have additional sump pump parts.
